ronenv: What I want from a future camera A few months ago I got to play around with google glass. It immediately became my favorite camera; I can’t wait to have one. Being able to seamlessly record from life is amazing. It was really annoying going back to my clunky camera I have to take out of my pocket and keep holding and pointing while stuff is happening. Here are some of my notes for features that aren’t a part of glass right now, but that I’d want in a “persistent” camera: - It should start recording a minute before I tell it to hit record. (It can do this by constantly recording and clearing the cache every 90 seconds, and when I trigger recording, it just saves the last cache). This is my most-desired feature. Think of those russian dashboard cams: you’ll never miss anything because you didn’t have your camera out and recording. - “Natural” Language triggers. Example command: Every time I say “Holy shit”, start recording from 30 seconds before. - Saving people: Every time I say “Good to meet you”, record an image with face-detection, and save whatever I said after “good to meet you, ____” add that person’s name to my contacts, and for me to search (by face) later if I need to recall their name. - Inward facing camera to read eye motion, so the camera knows what I’m looking at and can center the frame around that. also this way I can use eye commands (such as double-blinking to tag a moment or toggle recording, etc). As James Powderly and others have proven, eye-detection can make a good tool for User Interfaces for handicapped people— no reason not to let all of us do the same. The near future’s going to be so much fun. The only sad part is it’ll be harder to take selfies :( The cord which trips its shutter may reach down a man’s sleeve within easy reach of his fingers. A quick squeeze, and the picture is taken. On a pair of ordinary glasses is a square of fine lines near the top of one lens, where it is out of the way of ordinary vision. When an object appears in that square, it is lined up for its picture. As the scientist of the future moves about the laboratory or the field, every time he looks at something worthy of the record, he trips the shutter and in it goes, without even an audible click.
